The Joe Fulton International Trade Corridor encompasses
a 11.5-mile road and 7-mile rail project for the Port of Corpus
Christi that will significantly improve access to over 2,000 acres
of land along the northside of the channel for existing and future
development. The corridor will make approximately 1,000 acres
of land (which has no access) available for use as marine terminals
and industrial sites. The Joe Fulton International Trade Corridor
will:
- Connect
two major highway components - US Highway 181 and Interstate
37
- Establish
efficient intermodal links between highway, marine, and rail
transportation systems
- Address
environmental and safety concerns
- Enhance
access to existing industries
- Facilitate
international trade
- Most
important, generate future economic development for South Texas
- Connect
to San Antonio via I-37
- Connect
to Laredo via 44/59
- Connect
to Mexico (Rio Grande Valley) via US 77 (proposed I-69)
Total project budget is estimated at $56 million with $25.6 million
in federal and state funding. Construction began in June 2004
with an award of $37.7 million contracted to Hass-Anderson Construction.
Estimated completion of the road and rail is in Spring 2008.
