The
La Quinta Trade Gateway project is a major component of the Port’s
long-term diversification plan. The 1100-acre site will accommodate
a modern, multi-modal facility providing seamless transfer of
cargo, trailers, and containers between highway, rail, ferry,
coastal and deep sea conveyances. Its 3800 ft shoreline and 45
– 50 ft channel depth affords space for a dock-structure
adequate for the largest and most efficient containerships (up
to three at one time). More than 5000 ft of on-dock, intermodal
railtracks will handle complete trains without switching. The
La Quinta Trade Gateway is a rational solution to the problem
of congestion at East and West Coast ports. Infrastructure development
is underway with tenants already on site.
Gulf Compress, La Quinta’s first tenant, completed the development
of a new 575,000 sq-ft covered storage facility to store cotton.
La Quinta is ready and available to serve major, world-wide shippers.
Key
Drivers for Developing the La Quinta Trade Gateway Terminal
- Lower
Inland Transport Costs – La Quinta will enable lines
to serve importers/exporters in South, West, and Central Texas,
as well as in Northern Mexico, with lower costs.
-
Import/Export Distribution Ops – No other
port on the Gulf Coast can match La Quinta’s ability to
provide shippers with low-cost, “on-dock” land for
distribution center operations.
- Risk
Mitigation for Shipment Delays – For shippers located
outside of metropolitan Houston, La Quinta can provide a viable,
alternative gateway, without the risk of transit delays due
to road and rail congestion or due to air quality-related operating
restrictions.
- Security
– As a green-field site, La Quinta can be built to incorporate
the latest
federal security requirements.
- Growth
– Site has enough land for future terminal expansion or
development of distribution centers.
Located
on nearby, largely rural property, La Quinta provides uncongested
roadway access to Interstate 37 as well as to the nation’s
two major developing transportation corridors – Interstate
39 and Interstate 69.. This access to capable and efficient connectors
gives the La Quinta Trade Gateway a significant competitive advantage
to service nearby consumer markets and production areas. La Quinta
is being designed to take full advantage of its proximity to the
Union Pacific main line, which links to other Class One operators,
including BNSF and TexMex railroads.
