Port
of Corpus Christi Announces Australia Service
Business Booming at Corpus Christi Cold Storage
The Port of Corpus Christi announces a trial service with C&
S Shipping Australia PTY through December 2002. This service runs
from Australia- Corpus Christi, TX- Wilmington, DE.
"
This trial service gives the Port the opportunity to showcase
our facility, labor, and the advantages of doing business in Corpus
Christi," said Ed Altemus, Port of Corpus Christi Trade Development
Director. " I believe C&S will see the benefits and continue
the service on a regular basis," added Altemus. "The
Port's cold storage has only been open for two years and we are
handling a variety of domestic products, New Zealand imports,
and now Australian imports, primarily meat," added Altemus.
"
In fact, the Port is already beginning to survey the possibilities
of expanding its 100,000 square foot refrigerated warehouse thus
generating more jobs for South Texas. The cold storage features
frozen and chill rooms; however, we have tapped into some major
frozen cargo markets where Corpus Christi clearly shows distinct
advantages and efficiencies. For a "cold" business,
things are really "hot" in Corpus Christi right now,"
said Altemus.
In
2001, the first full year of business, the Port handled more than
21,000 pallets of primarily New Zealand beef and apple imports
along with some domestic products. As of August 2002, the Port
has handled nearly 23,000 pallets. " With the trial Australian
meat imports and increased boxing projects, our business is rapidly
increasing," according to Chuck Margraf, Port of Corpus Christi
Cold Storage Manager.
