The Port of Corpus Christi will start work immediately on a major container terminal that will anchor the Texas port's efforts to lure international trade. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers approved plans for the La Quinta Trade Gateway, a terminal based at a 1,100-acre site that will connect to a railroad and highway for links to inland transport. Corpus Christi officials say they expect to target lines hauling consumer goods as part of a plan to diversify the port's business and tie it more closely into supply chains flowing through containerized cargo. "The long-term solution to congestion is to locate new ports in areas that can accommodate the growth," said port Director John LaRue.
